Keeping our neighborhood safe requires awareness and accountability from both pedestrians and drivers. Everyone has a role to play in preventing accidents and keeping our streets safe.
A reminder to drivers:
Our neighborhood speed limit of 25 mph—and 20 mph around corners—exists for a reason. They give drivers the time and visibility needed to react safely when pedestrians are present.
-
At a minimum, follow posted speed limits and be prepared to slow down when approaching pedestrians.
-
Remember that walkers may be accompanied by children or pets, who can be unpredictable.
-
Limit distractions. A moment of inattention can have serious consequences.
A reminder to pedestrians:
Pedestrians also play an important role in roadway safety.
-
Stay alert and aware of your surroundings—your eyes and ears are your best safety tools.
-
Avoid distractions such as phones or headphones that limit your awareness.
-
Be visible, especially in low-light conditions like dawn, dusk, or nighttime.
-
Follow traffic rules and, where sidewalks are not available, walk facing oncoming traffic as required by law.
At the end of the day, this is about common courtesy and mutual respect. By slowing down, staying alert, and looking out for one another, we help protect our neighbors and the community we all share.
